AEC firms are looking to AI to help their technical teams deliver more efficiently while qualified talent remains hard to find. The goal is to extend the capacity of the people they have. Internal talent acquisition teams deserve that same investment in how their work gets done.
The pressure is real: ACEC Research Institute’s Q3 2026 survey reported a 12-month median backlog, with 88% of responding firms carrying at least one open position. Firms need both better delivery workflows and better access to talent.
Look at where the recruiting day goes
Searching across tools. Opening profiles. Checking technical experience. Finding contact information. Rebuilding lists for the next role. When those steps consume the day, recruiters have less time to engage people, understand motivations and guide a promising candidate toward a decision.
Many of the professionals firms want are already employed. Reaching them requires relevant intelligence and a credible conversation. A larger stack of disconnected sourcing tools does not automatically make that work more efficient.
Redesign the work around the recruiter
Use AI to translate a hiring brief into research criteria and help organize information. Pair it with a deep AEC intelligence source and verification, so the team can build relevant candidate pools at scale. Preserve the research and engagement history for the next search.
Then put more of the recruiter’s time into conversations: explaining the opportunity, learning what would make a move worthwhile, coordinating technical evaluation and keeping the hiring process moving.
Start with a five-day time audit
Track hours spent on discovery, verification, outreach preparation and candidate conversations. Pilot an improved workflow on one comparable role. Compare sourcing hours per verified, relevant candidate, cost per qualified conversation and recruiter time available for engagement. Use those measures to test efficiency and cost—not message volume alone.
This is where AECIQ fits: AEC-specific talent intelligence and sourcing support that help internal teams research at scale and reuse what they learn. The objective is a more productive recruiting function, with more time focused on landing quality talent.
